One of our classmates wrote this and posted it on open forum:
During one of the most serious budget situations in our state's history there is a great need for innovative solutions to alleviate the pressure on our economy. This week, Assembly Bill 390 was introduced, proposing the regulation and taxation of our largest cash crop - Marijuana. Please take just a minute of your time to email the CA representative of your choice and tell them that you support this progressive move towards a safe-and-sane cannabis policy. Just follow this link, and don't forget to visit CSUMB NORML's First class forum in the Student Organizations section of Conferences.

CSUMB NORML
The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws
I will be truthful I didn't go to the site and check it out, because I do not believe that legalizing Marijuana will be good for society or our country, what will it say to other countries that are trying to stop drug trafficking and drug addictions among it’s people, if we as one of the most powerful countries of the World –legalizes Marijuana. I know that some people in the generation/age group as myself—believe that if we are to legalize it then it will take away the want for the younger generation to want to smoke pot, since it’s will no longer be a crime if legalized, where’s the adventure in trying not to get caught doing something your not suppose to. There’d be no fun it! But I believe they are wrong-it will just encourage our youth to try more hard elicit drugs! Like Coke and Heroin! I could be wrong, but since it’s still legal to drink under the age of 21, most kids that die from drinking are under the age of 21. Die while binge drinking or during a hazing party and most are under the age of 21. Those who drink also do other elicit drugs and not just Marijuana. Remember guys, back in the day when I was in my teens, actually when I was 18—it was legal to drink and most of my friends that drank did other elicit drugs and not just Marijuana—I on the other hand seen so many of those same kids die before they enter High School. I lost about 35 – 40 of my Jr. High School friends mainly male friends to either alcohol and or both drugs and alcohol combinations. I’d just like for all of you to think about the ramifications –the long range ramifications if Marijuana is legalized, because sure even though you might think it would be great now—someday you all will become parents and you might not necessarily want your daughter or son do some of the same things you did as a young college student. I got lucky with all three of my daughters they saw what alcohol and smoking cigarettes did to my health as I got older, drinking prematurely aged me and smoking-- will I know have a severe case of asthma and a slight case of emphysema, the lucky part comes in that none of my girls are drinkers or cig smokers and none did drugs. And sure you say how do, I know that they never tried drugs—because they knew if I ever found out they’d be dead in a heart beat. LOL!!!!! And it obvious that I don't support the this bill or the legalization of any form of elicit drug and just the fact that one of our politicians would even introduce such a bill for consideration is beyond words. My only suggestion is that if you agree with write, text, email call your CA representatives and tell them not support such an outlandish bill as this one. And I apologize right now if I happen to offend anyone, by my comments. From one concerned parent/student, to the future leaders, teachers, bankers, CEO’s, politicians of our Planet!

hmmm... I can respect your opinion in regard to the usage of marajuana. I even share it. I dont smoke, I dont drink, none of that, nor do I condone the usage of any drugs.
My problem lies in one of your connections, that of drinking and marajuana usage. forgive me if I dont see how the one relates to th other. that's like saying that people who eat sushi also eat boursch. sure there are some that do both but I dont see any logical links between the two. someting to think about.
You wrote an interesting blogg. The problem is that you are gravely misinformed. I would tell you to go out and get some education on the issue, though from your writing, I see that you hide from the truth on purpose. You seem to hide from the truth for reasons of pride. What is sad is that as you said 35-40 friends from your Junior High School have died, it is that pride that has killed them and continues to kill and make problems for America.
There has actually been quite a bit of research on Marijuana, even though the U.S. government has done everything in it power to prevent it, because it’s easier to hide the truth then to face it. 1930’s New York Mayor Therela Le Guarda did one of the first marijuana studies. He found no side effects other then chemical stimulation like coffee, alcohol and nicotine. Since then Stanford University did a study in the early 1960’s they found that, “Marijuana usually makes people intoxicated, happy; then eventually it makes them sleepy”. In the early 1970’s, President Nixon had concerns about Marijuana, so he put together a presidential commission to find out about the dangers of Marijuana. The commission found no dangers. So Nixon never read the report, he just through it in wastebasket after spending lots of money (typical Republican stuff). It is amazing to what ends and social sacrifices people will go to, just to hide from the truth. The only thing anybody has ever proved is that smoking marijuana has the same side effects as smoking cigarettes. Though of course you don’t have to smoke marijuana, you can buy a vaporizer or put it in food, like brownies. I have known and heard of many people who have been smoking marijuana for around 40 years with out problems.
There is also the issue that Marijuana affects everybody. The government has decided to criminalize Marijuana since the Unified National Narcotics Act of the early 1930’s. In a less then 100 year the U.S. government has spent over $200 billion on trying to restrict Marijuana. The thing is that all during that time, hundreds pone hundreds of kilos of marijuana has made its way into the United States. Also, organized crime gangsters run the organizations that bring Marijuana in to America. Just purely because America has made the decision, the gangsters have a business. With their business gangsters collect money, which they invest in different rackets. So god only knows how much money they have made and were it has gone to hurt other people. All this can be stopped if the United States would change its mind and people stop hiding from the truth. Also not to mention that stuff the gangsters sell is often laciest with bad chemicals and is dirty. By decriminalizing marijuana we will not just put criminals out of business, we can collect a lot of taxes. With the taxes and funds that were once spent on marijuana enforcement, police can put lots more power and attention to going after the dangerous drugs. Also we can afford more rehabilitation and addiction research beyond any imagination.
The main thing is that decriminalization has worked. Some say Marijuana is the gateway drug, the only reason it is said to be is just because it sounds good. Yes a lot of people have done Marijuana before doing harder drugs, though how many people have drunken beer or coffee first, or have had chocolate or aspirin. Why aren’t the aforementioned things called gateway drugs too? Also as even you point out that when something is criminalized, it as bad mastic; it’s a forbidden fruit. During the 1970’s some individual states decided to decriminalize marijuana; Oregon was one of them in 1972
